What inspired you to start your own business?

After spending most of my nursing career working with seniors—especially those living with dementia—I saw firsthand how many individuals were falling through the cracks. Too often, people who have outlived their savings or who display challenging behaviors are left isolated at home, cared for by exhausted family members, or placed in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities that aren't designed for their needs. I wanted to create something different—an affordable, compassionate, and enriching environment where all individuals living with dementia could receive the care and dignity they deserve. Whispering Willows was born from that vision.

Can you provide a brief overview of your business and the services you offer?

Whispering Willows is a full-service, specialized dementia care community dedicated to supporting individuals at every stage of their journey. We provide assistance with all activities of daily living — from active residents to those who are fully bed-bound. Our staff is highly trained in dementia care and behavioral health support, ensuring each resident receives personalized and compassionate attention.

We also cater to specialized dietary needs and offer a full range of engaging, stimulating activities from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. Every aspect of our community is designed to enhance quality of life, promote meaningful connection, and bring joy to everyday moments.

What sets your business apart from others in the same industry?

Whispering Willows is locally owned and operated by nurses with decades of experience in memory care—a rarity in today's senior living industry. Our hands-on background means we deeply understand what our residents need to thrive. We believe in creating a true home, not just a facility. Our residents enjoy freshly prepared, flavorful meals; music that stirs memories and emotions; and daily interactions that nurture both body and spirit. At Whispering Willows, we see the person behind the diagnosis, and our care reflects that belief.

How do you maintain a positive company culture within your business?

A positive workplace starts with respect and appreciation. We treat every employee fairly, pay a livable wage, and give bonuses to all employees, recognizing their exceptional performances. We're committed to providing opportunities for both personal and professional growth within Whispering Willows.
We also encourage our staff to be active in the community, whether serving on local boards or volunteering at events. When employees feel valued and connected, that positivity flows directly into the care they provide.

How do you engage with the local community and support local causes?

Community involvement is a cornerstone of who we are. Whispering Willows proudly sponsors and volunteers at numerous local events. We support Meals on Wheels, provide Thanksgiving turkeys for the Boys & Girls Club, raise funds for the Sedro-Woolley High School Music Department, and contribute to Skagit County Senior Centers.

We also partner with the Skagit Adult Day Program (The Bradford House) by providing meals for their "Lunch and Learn" sessions. Giving back is our way of staying connected and strengthening the community that supports us.

What is the most rewarding aspect of running your business?

The most rewarding part is seeing the joy and peace on our residents' faces-knowing they're living their best possible life despite dementia. Hearing gratitude from family members who finally see their loved ones thriving again is deeply moving.

It's also incredibly fulfilling to receive appreciation from staff who are proud to work in a place that values both their efforts and the people they care for. Those shared moments of connection remind us why we do what we do every single day.

How do you ensure the quality of your services?

Quality starts with presence. As the Executive Director-and as a nurse-I'm actively involved in the day-to-day operations and ready to step in at any moment. Our team members are carefully selected not just for their skills but for their heart. They want to be here, and that makes all the difference.

We also prioritize continuous training, open communication, and constant evaluation to ensure we're always improving and delivering the best possible care.

Can you share a significant milestone or accomplishment your business has achieved?

Whispering Willows has achieved several exciting milestones since opening:

Licensed on September 23, 2024

Accepted into the Specialized Dementia Care Program (SDCP) on September 26, 2024—a distinction typically reserved for facilities with at least one year of operation Included in the Enhanced Specialized Dementia Care Program (ESDCP)

Welcomed our first resident on October 1, 2024

Achieved a Deficiency-Free State Survey within our first year—an incredibly rare accomplishment.

Voted Best Memory Care in Skagit Valley, 2025

Each milestone represents our team's dedication, compassion, and commitment to excellence.

What role does technology play in your business operations?

Technology enhances nearly every aspect of our operations—from electronic medical records and communication systems to entertainment and resident engagement. Our facility is fully equipped with Wi-Fi throughout, and we incorporate technology into our music therapy, theater activities, and administrative systems.

While were rooted in personal connection, we embrace modern tools that help us deliver smarter, safer, and more efficient care.

Have you always been an entrepreneur, or did you have a different career path before starting this business?

My primary career has always been in nursing, though I also previously owned and operated an Adult Family Home. Those experiences shaped my understanding of both the medical and business sides of care, giving me the foundation to build Whispering Willows with a blend of clinical expertise and genuine compassion.

How do you see your business contributing to the growth and development of the local economy?

We're proud to create local jobs that offer fair wages, growth potential, and stability. By sourcing products and services from local vendors whenever possible, we help support other small businesses in Skagit Valley.

Looking ahead, we plan to open a second senior community in the region-further expanding opportunities for employment, partnership, and compassionate care right here at home.
